Face ID Not Working?- Here’s how to fix it.

September 29, 2022

Face ID unlocks your iPhone faster and simpler than ever before, authenticating downloads, making purchases, and more. However, Face ID is not perfect, and sometimes it can fail to work as intended. Face ID might not work on your iPhone for a few different reasons. This article will cover some of the most common causes and how to fix them.

If you’re having trouble getting Face ID to work on your iPhone or iPad, here are a few tips that might help.

Check Face ID Settings:

Before moving on to the repairs, it’s a good idea to check if Face ID is activated or not. Here’s how to verify that & check its preferences:

  • Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode on the iPhone.
  • If you come across the option to Reset Face ID, it means you’ve already used it. If not, follow the on-screen instructions to set it up now.
  • Ensure that the following features are enabled: iTunes & App Store, iPhone Unlock, Wallet, Password AutoFill, and Apple Pay.

Clean the TrueDepth Camera:

Clean the top part of your iPhone with a soft, dry cloth to ensure that the Face ID sensor is clear. Body oils and grime may build up on your phone if you hold it against your ear for too long, causing Face ID to work improperly.

Furthermore, if your iPhone or iPad is protected by a tough casing or a thick screen protector that masks the TrueDepth camera, be sure to remove them.

Check to see whether your face is blocked:

If you’re sure your phone is clean and there’s nothing blocking Face ID sensors, the next step is to see if something is blocking your face.

If you’re wearing a cap, scarf, or sunglasses, take them off. Sunglasses with polarized lenses might prevent Face ID from recognizing you correctly. If Face ID isn’t working, try taking off any accessories and moving your head around so that Face ID can scan your face again.

Restart your iPhone:

Restarting your iPhone is one of the most basic but successful techniques for resolving Face ID issues. It can fix many minor software glitches that may be causing the problem.

After you’ve restarted the device, any issues with your Face ID components should be resolved. . However, when you unlock your iPhone for the first time after performing this, you’ll have to re-enter your passcode.

Update Your iPhone to the Latest iOS Version:

If Face ID isn’t working, ensure that your iPhone or iPad is running the latest version of iOS. If there’s an update available, download and install it. After updating your iPhone, try setting up Face ID again to see if that solves the problem.

Check Face ID Permission for Third-Party Apps:

An app may be using Face ID without your knowledge, which could interfere with other apps that use Face ID. To prevent this, check the permissions for each app that uses Face ID.

To do this, open the Settings app and go to “Face ID & Passcode.” Then scroll down to see a list of apps that use Face ID. If an app you don’t recognize is listed here, tap it and select “Delete App” to remove it from your device.

Create an Alternate Appearance:

If Face ID isn’t working, it may be because you look different than when you set up Face ID. For example, you might have grown a beard or put on glasses.

To fix this issue:

  • In the settings for Face ID & Passcode, create an alternate appearance.

Reset Face ID:

Resetting Face ID is another way to resolve any issues you may have with the Face ID on your iPhone. You can do this by going to Settings -> Face ID & Passcode -> Reset Face ID. Enter your passcode when prompted, then tap on the option to Reset Face ID.

After resetting, you’ll need to set up Face ID again. This time, ensure that you correctly position your face in front of the phone so that Face ID can properly scan and recognize it.

Reset All Settings:

If resetting your Face ID doesn’t work, you can try resetting your iPhone’s settings to see if that resolves the problem. This won’t delete any data but will reset all of your preferences and settings to their defaults. After you’ve reset your settings, check to see if Face ID is working or not.

To reset your iPhone’s settings:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap General.
  • At the bottom of the screen, tap Reset.
  • Tap Reset All Settings and enter your passcode when prompted.
  • Tap Reset All Settings to confirm and wait for your iPhone to restart.
  • Check to see if Face ID is now working by trying to unlock your iPhone.

Restore Your iPhone to factory settings:

If you’ve tried all of the above methods and Face ID still isn’t working, your next step is to erase your iPhone and start from scratch. This will delete all your data, so back up your device first. Once you’ve backed up your data, follow the instructions below to restore your iPhone:

  • Connect your iPhone to your computer using a Lightning cable and launch iTunes or Finder.
  • Click on the device icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  • Click Restore in the Summary pane.
  • Click Restore again when prompted and wait for iTunes or Finder to erase your device and install the latest iOS software.
  • Set up your device and check to see if the Face ID is now working.

Use DFU mode to fix firmware issues:

If you still can’t get Face ID to work, there may be an issue with the firmware on your iPhone. In this case, you can try using DFU mode to restore your device. This process will delete all your data, so make sure you’ve backed up your device first. Once you’ve backed up your data, follow the instructions below to put your iPhone into DFU mode:

  • Connect your iPhone to your computer using a Lightning cable and launch iTunes or Finder.
  • Once it’s connected, quickly press and release the volume up button, followed by the volume down button.
  • Press and hold the side button for 10 seconds. While holding the side button, press and hold the volume down button for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, release the side button while keeping the volume down button pressed for 10 more seconds.
  • You will see a message on your screen that says, “Your iPhone or iPad needs to be restored because it is in an invalid state.”
  • Choose “Restore” in either iTunes or Finder.
  • After the process, your device will be back to normal, and you can set it up however you’d like.
